What cryoablation is
Cryoablation is an image-guided technique that destroys targeted tissue by freezing it. A cryoprobe is placed into the tumour and run through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which produce coagulative necrosis within the treated zone. The injury is caused by cold rather than heat.
As the tissue freezes, an ice ball forms around the probe tip. This ablation zone is visible under imaging such as ultrasound or CT, which lets the operator follow the freeze as it develops and check that the intended area is covered.
How the procedure works
The procedure is planned and carried out under imaging so the operator can place the probes and watch the ablation zone in real time.
- Plan under imaging. The operator reviews the target and surrounding structures on imaging and decides probe number and placement.
- Place the cryoprobes. One or more cryoprobes are advanced into the tumour under image guidance.
- Deliver freeze-thaw cycles. The system runs controlled freeze-thaw cycles through the probes, building the ice ball over the target.
- Confirm ice-ball coverage. The operator checks on imaging that the ice ball covers the intended ablation zone before completing the procedure.

Who it is for
Cryoablation systems are used by interventional radiologists and by surgical and urological oncology teams. Patient selection and the decision to treat are clinical judgements made by the treating physician for each case.

Frequently asked questions
How does cryoablation differ from heat-based ablation?
Cryoablation destroys tissue by freezing it through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, rather than by heating it as radiofrequency or microwave ablation do. One practical difference is that the resulting ice ball is visible under imaging, which can help the operator monitor the ablation zone.
Can the ablation zone be monitored?
Yes. The ice ball that forms around the cryoprobe is visible under imaging such as ultrasound or CT, so the operator can follow its progress and confirm that it covers the intended area.
Do you train our team and supply cryoprobes?
Yes. We provide hands-on training for your clinical and biomedical teams at installation and supply cryoprobes and consumables on an ongoing basis.
